Ruben Amorim has been urged to break the first promise he made at Manchester United as the January transfer window approaches.

Ruben Amorim assumed the role of Manchester United manager in November and has encountered challenges during his initial matches at Old Trafford.

United have managed only four wins in his first 10 games, reflecting the difficulties the squad faces in adjusting to Amorim’s system.

While players such as Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui have shown encouraging signs and potential for long-term success under the Portuguese coach, the underwhelming performances of others highlight the pressing need for reinforcements in future transfer windows.

Up front, the attacking duo of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have left much to be desired and many are calling for the club to sign a top class centre forward.

Amorim’s promise about Sporting transfers

As soon as Amorim made the decision to join United, links to Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres were inevitable.

The Swedish forward came to stardom under the management of the 39-year-old in Portugal and scored 66 goals in 68 appearances for Amorim.

United are reportedly interested in signing Gyökeres next summer. Any mid-season links were scrapped by Amorim’s comments shortly after he joining United.

The head coach quickly told reporters that he would not be attempting to sign any of his Sporting players in the January transfer window despite hinting that he may be eyeing some of them after that.

“I won’t be signing [Sporting players] in January, that’s what I said,” Amorim told reporters in November.

“I don’t know about the summer. The main thing is to hold on until the summer [laughs]. After that, we’ll see, Sporting’s players are very good players. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

Amorim told to break promise to sign Gyökeres

Despite that promise, Amorim has been told that he should break the promise to his former club and sign Gyökeres in January to help save United’s season.

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer believes that United’s priority next month should be to sign a ‘top striker’ and that Amorim’s position may change over his stance on signing his former goalscorer.

“Where do you start?” Shearer said in an interview with The Mirror. “Without doubt, United need a top striker, I’ve made my feelings clear on that for a long time now.”

“They could go out and spend a load of money on Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim obviously knows him really well.

“He said that he wouldn’t go back to Sporting to take them out, but that may change. Ultimately, they need players all over the park, one of the important ones is the position I played in and for me they need a top-class striker.”

“United have got talented youngsters there, but when you have that you also need a sprinkling of top quality, experienced players in and around them. Clearly, there aren’t enough of those at Old Trafford at this moment in time.

“There’s work to be done in every department at the club, hence where they are in the league and where they are a club at this moment in time.”
