Manchester United legendary midfielder Paul Scholes has given a surprise reaction to the news that Erik ten Hag will be staying at Old Trafford next season.

Erik ten Hag will be staying at Manchester United for the start of next season after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford have ultimately decided to move forward with the Dutchman at Old Trafford.

Across the last six months, many have questioned if Ten Hag is the right man to take United into the new INEOS-led era, but after three weeks of deliberation following an FA Cup final win over Manchester City, United bosses ultimately decided it was the right decision.

They had spoken to many other candidates, such as Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel, about potentially taking over from Ten Hag, but once it became obvious that their alternative choices were not available, the decision was clear.

While the news has yet to be officially confirmed, all major publication outlets have now claimed it to be true. The FA Cup final result, combined with strong fan backing, ultimately led to the decision.

The news broke through late on Tuesday evening in the United Kingdom, meaning many are only learning of the decision now. One of those is former United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes, who has explained that although he is surprised, it is “nice” news to wake up to.

“Nice to wake up to this news, although I did think Palace away felt like the end,” Scholes wrote on his Instagram story.

“Major improvements needed but at least we have a bit of continuity and don’t have to wait for a new regime to settle in… fans have given him and the players incredible support and deserve better next season.”

Erik ten Hag is set to return to Carrington for pre-season training towards the beginning of July. United will be facing Rosenborg in Norway and Rangers in Scotland before travelling to the United States of America to play Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool.

The Premier League is due to start on the weekend of 17/18 August, with the fixture list to be announced next Tuesday.
