Sunderland boss Michael Beale has admitted that he still wants Amad Diallo to return to the club on loan despite Manchester United’s clear transfer plan.

Amad Diallo lit up the Championship last season after Manchester United sent him on a season-long loan to Sunderland, allowing the young winger a full first season in English football.

Amad played 42 games for the club during 2022/23 and scored 14 goals, also providing four assists and winning their Young Player of the Season award before reintegrating into Erik ten Hag‘s squad.

He then suffered an injury during pre-season that ruled him out for the remainder of the calendar year, with the player appearing for the first time in 2023/24 during United’s final fixture of 2023 against Nottingham Forest.

Despite there being reports that Amad may now go on loan again, it has been said that the club want to keep him at Old Trafford for the rest of the summer amid big goalscoring problems under Ten Hag – something that Sunderland manager Michael Beale woes.

“We’ve made it really clear to them that we would be in there, but Man United really value him as well,” Beale said recently.

“He could have an interesting second half of the season in-house, but if he was to go out on loan, I can assure you, they are well aware we would want him to come back here.

“Putting finances aside – because that’s the big thing, isn’t it – I know he loved his time here, the fans loved him, and he was well loved in the changing room.

“When I came here, it was something that if it could happen, it would happen, but I think Man Utd realise they have a very good football player on their hands.”

Amad is in line to start as United travel to face Newport County away from home in the FA Cup fourth round, on Sunday, 28 January.
