Sunderland manager makes “impossible” claim with “really strong” performance from Manchester United duo

Regis Le Bris has revealed why it was “impossible” to stop Manchester United, with two players proving crucial for Rúben Amorim.

Despite being one of the newly promoted Premier League sides, Sunderland were favoured by some to defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford, likely due to the pressure mounting upon Rúben Amorim.

However, goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško gave United a 2-0 lead before Sunderland were forced into a tactical change before half-time. Regis Le Bris substituted Simon Adringra after just 37 minutes for Dom Ballard: replacing a left-winger for a central defender after two United goals.

While United weren’t as dangerous after the first-half change, Amorim’s side looked the more likely to score the third goal of the game, despite two penalty claims for incidents involving Šeško and Senne Lammens.

There were few standouts for the Red Devils, as United played an all-round impressive performance for only the second time this season. Perhaps, Amorim has managed to rally the squad together before they prepare for Liverpool after the international break.

Le Bris reveals why United beat Sunderland

Amad returned to the starting lineup after missing the Brentford game due to personal reasons. The Ivorian has struggled so far this season, but showed his true form against Sunderland, combining well with Bryan Mbeumo.

“We were aware of their strength,” said Regis Le Bris after the game. “They went direct, second balls. It’s impossible to stop this idea.

“Their right side with Amad and Mbeumo, they were really strong.”

Sunderland’s left side of defence – Arthur Masuaku – couldn’t handle the skill of United’s two right-sided players, even after Adingra made way for more defensive reinforcement.

Amad and Mbeumo will be key for United going forward, especially against sides who sit off and force Amorim’s team to break them down. Their rotations and creativity will prove crucial for the rest of Amorim’s tenure as United manager.

Dalot will struggle for regular gametime this season

Diogo Dalot started at left-wing-back against Sunderland, making way for Amad on the right side. The Portuguese full-back was lucky to start in place of Patrick Dorgu, who hasn’t played his best football this season.

Dorgu – who is still only 20 years old – has already shown promise on United’s left side, and could be a great asset if he can improve his final product. Šeško could regularly find himself on the end of Dorgu’s crosses.

When Dorgu returns to form, Dalot will make way for the young Dane, and Amad will keep his place on the right side. Dalot will be in competition with Noussair Mazraoui and Diego Leon for a place on the bench, never mind the starting lineup.

Despite his good form under Erik ten Hag, Dalot has seriously struggled under Amorim – especially this season – and needs to improve quickly if he wants to play regular football.
