Steve Bruce lauds two Man United outcasts for performances vs Crystal Palace
Manchester United won 3-0 against Crystal Palace in their third-round Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday evening as Erik ten Hag’s side showed their best performance of the season.
The goals came from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial but the display saw almost every United player shine as they looked to turn a corner following the poor start to the season.
Harry Maguire started alongside Raphael Varane in the centre of United’s defence and performed excellently to help put the focus on off-field issues behind him.
The England international was stationed on the left-hand side, with Varane on the right, and looked much more comfortable than when he has played on the opposite side under Ten Hag.
He started the game as he meant to go on with a crucial interception from a dangerous Palace cross that would’ve almost certainly ended as a goal.
Former United defender Steve Bruce was impressed by the defender’s performance but believes that it was not dissimilar to what he has already shown to the Old Trafford crowd.
“He did what Harry does,” said Bruce whilst on Sky Sports punditry duty. “I’ve seen Harry play so many times like this where he has done enough, he’s played well.
“You can see from the reaction of the supporters when he makes tackles. He is the one again. Fair play to him.”
Bruce also lauded the performance of Anthony Martial, who scored the third goal from a tight angle after a brilliant pass and assist from Casemiro.
“[His goal was] a quality finish, with his wrong foot,” the ex-defender added. “He’s had his critics over the years but he is a really talented footballer. To take that on your wrong side and stick it into the top corner is a great finish.”
