Sir Jim Ratcliffe old Man United comments come back to haunt him after controversial decision
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s old Manchester United comments have come back to haunt him after making a controversial decision.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been making many changes behind the scenes at United since INEOS took charge of the club.
While they are focused on improving the playing squad in the coming months, after deciding that Erik ten Hag would remain at the helm, there is also much to consider regarding Old Trafford.
The iconic stadium needs major improvements. United can either refurbish the current structure or construct a brand new stadium.
The possibility of destroying Old Trafford is already a very controversial move among United supporters. However, Ratcliffe’s latest decision might receive even more backlash.
According to The Athletic, United are considering selling the naming rights to a refurbished Old Trafford or a newly-built stadium.
It was explained that in the event of a refurbishment, one option might be for the club to retain the name Old Trafford but seek to have an associated partner.
However, in the event of a new build, United are open to selling the name altogether, which they hope would command tens of millions of pounds.
Not only is this a move that may cause controversy, but it is also one that Ratcliffe once vowed never to do.
Speaking before he won the battle with Sheikh Jassim, the British billionaire was asked about the prospect of selling Old Trafford’s naming rights, and he claimed that doing so would be ‘heresy’.
As quoted by the Mirror, he said: “I hadn’t thought of that, but no. That would be heresy. I would not change it. It’s always Old Trafford.”
After several other questionable decisions away from the field in recent weeks, Ratcliffe has made it clear that he is prepared to unsettle people in order to do what he believes is best.
