Sir Alex Ferguson answered a widespread question about Marcus Rashford after the forward scored for Manchester United against Newcastle as The Reds won the Carabao Cup.

Rashford, 25, has been in scintillating form for United, scoring 25 times for the club so far this season.

There have always been debates about the Englishman’s best position. He was touted as a striker in his earlier seasons but has played as a left-winger more over the years.

Erik ten Hag has used him in both positions so far this season and with the absence of a world-class number nine, some fans believe he should play through the centre more.

However, legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson let his opinion on the subject known when being interviewed by Sky Sports following the Wembley win on the weekend.

Asking a question about the form of Rashford to the Scotsman, the reporter mentioned that Ferguson loved his strikers when he was a manager, to which the 81-year-old replied: “Well, I don’t think he’s a striker.

“He operates really from the left-hand side, fantastic, his finish is always good – he keeps his shots down, which is really important.

“And he’s on a great vein of form, and unfortunately for us, he’s the main source of goals. You know, we could do with an extra one but he’s doing it.”

Rashford has previously mentioned that he likes the fluidity given to the forwards at Old Trafford and enjoys moving across the offensive line, but Ferguson’s assessment is one that many can agree with.

Coming from the left, Rashford seems impossible to stop at times. Many goalscorers are beginning to come in the form of ‘inside wingers’ in the modern game and that seems like the exact profile that Ten Hag wants the 25-year-old to be.
