Senne Lammens to Manchester United is ‘getting closer’, one hurdle to be jumped with talks this weekend

Manchester United are getting closer to securing the signing of goalkeeper target Senne Lammens, with both clubs getting closer to agreeing a fee for the shot-stopper

With just two days left of the summer transfer window, Manchester United have to move fast to both sell their want-away players and sign any targets.

After resolving their attacking problem, securing the signatures of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, the club have since shifted to focus on signing a midfielder and a goalkeeper.

Ruben Amorim urged the club to focus on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but after finding out a move for the Cameroonian would be almost impossible, the club shifted to looking for a new goalkeeper.

Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp has been United’s main target, with the 23-year-old being strongly linked with a move to United over the past few weeks, and despite progress stalling, a move looks likely for the Belgian.

Clubs close to agreeing Lammens fee

Despite only playing three games so far this season, both André Onana and Altay Bayındır have struggled between the sticks.

Bayındır was at fault for Arsenal’s goal in their 1-0 opening day defeat, flapping at a corner, allowing Ricardo Calafiori to score. The Turkish international almost repeated the same mistake against Fulham, but Ricardo Muniz was unable to convert.

As for Onana, the less said about his performance against Grimsby the better, with the 29-year-old gifting the League Two side both of their goals in normal time before saving just one out of a possible 13 Grimsby penalties, sending United crashing out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, however, United are working on a deal for Lammens this weekend, and the two clubs are now getting closer to agreeing on a fee for the highly rated keeper.

Lammens fits United’s new transfer strategy

United have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer, but the signing of a promising 23-year-old marks a clear shift in strategy. Instead of chasing established stars, the club now appears focused on building a more sustainable future.

After Gianluigi Donnarumma’s PSG exit was confirmed, United were quickly linked with the Italian. Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez was also mentioned as a target. Yet, with neither player arriving, it suggests the club may finally be learning from the transfer mistakes that created their current situation.

United’s finances have taken a major hit over the past three years, leaving them under pressure from Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Years of poor spending forced Ineos to rethink the approach to transfers, with wage structures seemingly playing a decisive role in recruitment going forward.

That strategy is already evident. Signing players like Donnarumma or Martínez would have required massive salaries, but Ineos seem determined to move away from marquee signings. Instead, the club is targeting exciting young talent at more manageable costs.
