Senne Lammens set for significant challenge at Manchester United following Ruben Amorim’s sacking

Senne Lammens is one of the players who is set for a significant challenge at Manchester United following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim has been dismissed as Manchester United manager following a spell of disappointing results and growing unrest behind the scenes.

United failed to claim maximum points against rivals Leeds United in the Premier League at the weekend, continuing a poor run that has produced just one win from their last five outings. Despite the dip in form, the club remains in sixth place in the table.

Reports suggest Amorim had been under increasing pressure from within the club to modify his tactical approach. Tensions reached a peak after the match at Elland Road, when he delivered an impassioned response, making it clear he viewed himself as the manager rather than merely a head coach.

That position is believed to have caused clashes with senior figures, including Jason Wilcox, whom Amorim reportedly told to concentrate on his own duties. The resulting power struggle and breakdown in working relationships ultimately led to the Portuguese coach losing his job.

Lammens set for significant challenge at United

Amorim made several signings during his time in charge at Old Trafford, with Senne Lammens being the final addition of the 2025 summer transfer window.

Lammens has had a good start to life at United even though defensive problems have continued, although he has had life simplified under Amorim.

The Belgian goalkeeper has rarely been tasked with playing the ball out of the back, instead kicking long to the likes of Benjamin Šeško or Bryan Mbeumo. On average, he completes around three short passes per game compared to 15 medium to long passes.

Under new management, the shot-stopper is likely to be tasked to take part more in shorter build-up play, which will be a new test for him at Old Trafford.

While he has not been involved much in the build-up so far this season, Lammens does look comfortable taking the ball on either foot. He could fit in nicely to a more ball-playing role although it will give him an increased responsibility.

Who will benefit from games at United

United are likely to return to a back-four formation for the rest of the season and it will be interesting to see which players benefit from the change.

The fullbacks are likely to be the ones who enjoy it the most as they have been struggling with the responsibilities of being the main attacking threats on the flanks.

Bringing back a midfield three will also likely benefit the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, who will be playing in their best positions.

It remains to be seen whether the adjustments will benefit Lammens or not, but it does seem like he will face a new challenge.
