Gianfranco Zola has claimed that Rasmus Højlund is ‘driving everyone crazy’ at Manchester United, as he blames Erik Ten Hag for Scott McTominay transfer.
In the summer transfer window, Manchester United parted ways with their Danish forward, Rasmus Højlund, on a season-long loan deal to Italian giants Napoli.
This move seemed to be best for both parties, as Ruben Amorim’s side were able to bring in Benjamin Šeško as a replacement, who, despite a lack of goals, has impressed with his overall performances.
Since moving back to Serie A, Højlund has managed to regain his form from old, and a brace on Sunday saw him take his tally up to six goals in 12 league appearances.
Although United seem happy with their new-look front three, Premier League legend Gianfranco Zola has suggested that the Dane is ‘driving everyone crazy’ at United.
Zola on ‘reckless’ United
When speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia, Zola predicted who would be the key players in Serie A for 2026, to which he mentioned two former United stars, Højlund and Scott McTominay.
The former striker said, “It’s complicated, almost impossible. I’d say Pio Esposito and Scamacca; they are gifts for the national team. Hojlund is driving everyone crazy, even people at Manchester United.
“After McTominay left because of [Erik] ten Hag’s reckless decisions, they let go of a striker like that.
“There’s also Lautaro Martinez or Marcus Thuram. Or even Cristian Chivu himself, or Antonio Conte, who could make history by winning two consecutive titles at Napoli.”
United regretting their decision?
It has been no secret that McTominay has taken Italy by storm since leaving Old Trafford, with the Scotsman even being nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, but it appears now that Højlund too could be finding his feet.
United won’t regret their decision to part ways with the Danish international in the summer, despite his recent form, as Højlund was given many chances to prove himself in England, but he struggled to deliver.

McTominay may be the one that the Reds regret the most due to their current midfield conundrum, especially considering the recent injury to Bruno Fernandes.
Despite the success of their former stars, it will be crucial that United don’t look back, as they still have plenty of talented players in their arsenal who can help them on their way back to the top.
