Scott McTominay sensational return thoughts revealed as Man Utd ‘leading the way’ for 2026 transfer

Italian reports have suggested that Manchester United are leading the way when it comes to Scott McTominay’s sensational return to the Premier League.

Scott McTominay left Manchester United at the beginning of the 2024/25 Premier League season in a deal worth around £30 million, as Erik ten Hag aimed to relieve Financial Fair Play pressure after the previous summer’s sale of James Garner for similar reasons.

Having spent his entire career at Old Trafford, McTominay moved to Napoli, where he quickly won over supporters with his impressive goal return from midfield.

In his first season in Italy, the Scotland international featured 36 times, scoring 13 goals and registering four assists as Napoli secured the Serie A title, with McTominay also collecting the league’s Player of the Season award.

He has carried that momentum into 2025/26, recording 10 goals and four assists in 34 appearances while operating as a left midfielder, attacking midfielder, and even in a more advanced role ahead of the defensive line when required under Antonio Conte.

United ‘leading the way’ for McTominay return

A few weeks ago, Napoli’s global business development officer, Leonardo Giammarioli, admitted that his side are worried that they wouldn’t be able to do too much to keep the 29-year-old if he were to leave this summer.

Following this, Tuttomercatoweb reports that McTominay is considering a move away from Naples, with him and his girlfriend, Cam Reading, considering a sensational return to England.

The report further states that the Scotsman is happy with his life in Naples, but that he is looking to return to Premier League football “sooner rather than later” as he reaches the peak of his career.

It is also noted that there are many teams across England who would be willing and ready to welcome him back to the Premier League, with United “leading the way” in this respect.

McTominay return depends on key decisions

There are a number of key decisions that United will have to make in the summer before any form of concrete move for McTominay can be considered. First, United need to secure their next permanent head coach, regardless of whether that is Michael Carrick.

Secondly, they must determine Bruno Fernandes’ future. Fernandes may be looking to leave United this summer if he feels he has a better chance of winning trophies elsewhere.

As the Portuguese international plays a similar position to where McTominay excels as an attacking, all-action midfielder, it may not make too much sense to bring back the Scottish international to play second fiddle to Fernandes.

While a romantic return for the man who spent around 20 years at the club would be a storyline next step in his career, his game-time and ability to win trophies must be taken into account by both parties before any plans are made.
