Scott McTominay has rubbished “toxic” rumours with a firm statement backing Erik ten Hag as Manchester United welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

There have been many rumours flying around in recent weeks that Erik ten Hag is losing his grip on the Manchester United dressing room, with players unsure about his methods and tactics – but Scott McTominay has come out to explain that these rumours are nothing but rubbish.

Scott McTominay is currently United’s top scorer this season with six goals and has started the last ten games across all competitions for the club.

He has been crucial in the last few months for Ten Hag, scoring important goals in big wins at a time when inconsistency is rife.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon ahead of United’s Champions League game against Bayern Munich, McTominay explained that the players are just as responsible as Ten Hag for poor results and that they all still believe in the manager.

“It is the players’ responsibility – we know that as well,” said the Scottish international. “We have big characters in the dressing room. It is not like the other managers when it has been toxic at times.

“The boys are firmly behind the manager. Players can get lost in translation, we just want to do well for the football club. It is as simple as that.”

Bayern Munich will grace Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, with anything less than a victory for Manchester United spelling disaster as they would crash out of the Champions League.

Even if they do defeat their German opponents on the night, they will also have to hope that the game between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw in order to finish in the top two positions of Group A.
