Sandro Tonali’s agent explains transfer ‘preference’ as Manchester United enter race for £100m star

Manchester United have recently been linked with a summer move for Newcastle star Sandro Tonali and his agent has been speaking to the media about his future.

Manchester United appear to be in a strong position under Michael Carrick after winning their last four matches against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

Those results have pushed the Reds firmly into the top-four race, with the added benefit of playing just once a week due to the absence of European football.

However, a key concern heading into the final stretch of the season is squad depth, particularly in midfield.

With Bruno Fernandes now back in his preferred No.10 role, Carrick is left with only three senior options for the double pivot: Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.

United opted against reinforcing the midfield in January, having instead decided to target at least two new signings in that area during the summer transfer window.

United interested in Tonali deal

United have been linked with similar names over the last few months, with Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson being the most-known links.

But the last week has also seen United rumoured to be interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali as it looks like Eddie Howe’s team are going to miss out on securing Champions League football for next season.

Reports are suggesting that the Italian midfielder could cost up to £100 million in the summer, which may deter some clubs from entering the race.

United are going to have some spare cash to spend after getting Casemiro’s wages off the books, as well as the potential sale of Manuel Ugarte, but it remains to be seen whether they will commit that kind of cash to signing Tonali.

United are not going to be the only club in the race to sign Tonali in the summer, with Arsenal also among the teams reportedly interested in him.

But at the moment, it doesn’t seem like Tonali’s camp are giving anything away in terms of his preferred move in the summer. His agent has explained there there is ‘no preference’ for the midfielder currently.

“Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League,” Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, told tuttosport.

“These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do. There’s no preference at the moment. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow.

Newcastle couldn’t let him go now, and there’s no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club. We’ll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer.”
