“Always the target” – Ruud van Nistelrooy agrees with reporter over Man United change vs Leicester City
Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy agreed with one reporter’s opinion on a change to the team against Leicester City on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United dominated Leicester City with a deserved 5-2 win at Old Trafford, propelling them into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s debut as interim manager.
United secured victory with goals from Casemiro (2), Bruno Fernandes (2) and Alejandro Garnacho, confidently booking their place in the next round.
It was exactly what the team needed after Erik ten Hag was sacked earlier this week. They have had a disappointing start to the season.
Yet, the team still conceded twice. The first came after Altay Bayındır’s poor punch to make the game 2-1 before Conor Coady scored a scrappy goal on the verge of half-time to make it 4-2.
Despite this, on both occasions after conceding, the United team kept their heads and went again to put together a solid overall performance.
Under Ten Hag, United had been guilty of dropping their levels against opponents after they conceded a goal. It would often lead to performances dropping and multiple goals being conceded without reply.
When speaking to Van Nistelrooy in an interview after the game, Sky reporter Melissa Reddy pointed out that his team showed ‘resilience’ and that it was noticed that heads didn’t drop after conceding.
“Yeah, that is the intention,” responded the interim boss. “And I think it is always the target for us to react and go straight back in to attack ourselves.
“I have to say the reaction of the players after these moments were excellent and they deserved the credits for a good win.
“We’re happy that the crowd goes home with a nice night of football.”
Van Nistelrooy may have more time at centre stage, with reports claiming that Ruben Amorim’s arrival may not come for two more weeks.
