Ruben Amorim’s stance on Kobbie Mainoo with Man Utd star ‘open to leaving’ this week

Ruben Amorim’s stance on Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has been revealed. The talented midfielder is ‘intrigued by a move’ this week.

With the new Premier League season now underway, Manchester United have played their first two matches, picking up only one point in the process.

Ruben Amorim’s side have posed far more threat than they did in the last campaign, but this hasn’t come to any fruition so far, with an own goal from Fulham being their only goal in two games.

Due to the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, captain Bruno Fernandes has been forced into a deeper role, which has seen Kobbie Mainoo struggle for game time.

The talented 20-year-old midfielder has been an unused substitute in both fixtures so far, much to the bemusement of many United fans who expected big things from the youngster this season.

Mainoo open to leaving this week

Mainoo, who broke into the United first team during the 2023/24 season, has struggled for regular game time under Amorim, with his 3-4-2-1 system not suiting the English midfielder.

After the 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday, TalkSPORT have reported that Mainoo would consider a move away from Manchester before deadline day.

Previously, Chelsea have been credited with interest in the 2005-born youngster, while the player himself was reportedly ‘intrigued about a move abroad’, according to The Guardian.

Mainoo is also yet to renew his deal at the club, which expires in 2027. He reportedly wants in the region of £150,000-a-week, but due to the club’s PSR concerns, they would be willing to sell their homegrown star.

Amorim’s stance revealed

After the Fulham draw, Amorim told reporters, regarding Mainoo: “He’s fighting for the position now with Bruno, and I change two midfielders.

“I let Mason Mount [play] there because we want to score a goal, and when I changed, I felt the team needed to return to one holding midfielder near Bruno.

“So he (Mainoo) just needs to fight for the position with Bruno, as [it] should be at Manchester United. [Sometimes] he’s going to play with Bruno, but at the moment he’s fighting in training with Bruno for the position.”

It was reported in June that Amorim ‘held positive talks’ with Mainoo, and that the English midfielder is motivated to break back into the starting XI at Old Trafford.

It will be interesting to see how this develops in the final week of the transfer window, as to whether Mainoo continues to try and work his way into the side, or whether he seeks new pastures elsewhere.
