Ruben Amorim is looking ahead to his first summer transfer window as Manchester United boss after a difficult first season in charge at Old Trafford.
Manchester United fans have been speaking about the importance of the summer window for some time now, with a desperate need to bring in quality signings.
The likes of Liam Delap and Matheus Cunha have been linked with an Old Trafford move but there is a much more important aspect to United’s transfer business.
So many times in recent years there has been a desire for many sales to take place to help generate funds and also move on unwanted players. That has rarely worked out.
This time around, it is clear that the intentions are the same and Ruben Amorim looks desperate to repeat the work from his first summer transfer window at Sporting.
Amorim wants huge amount of sales at United
Amorim took charge of Sporting in March 2020 and the following summer was an incredible one in terms of player exits at the Portuguese club.
Seven players were sold, three more left on free transfers and a staggering 15 players were loaned out – these were mostly first-team regulars as well.
Marcos Acuña had made 36 appearances the previous season and even wore the armband in the final game of the season against Benfica. Wendel had played 39 times that season while Gelson played 20 games.
Not every player who left were regulars in Amorim’s first few months but a great deal of them were. He wanted a huge change and that’s exact what he got.
Now, reports from Muppetiers claim that Amorim has made it clear to his United bosses that “he wants to dump an enormous amount of players” this summer, which is hardly surprising.
United have always struggled selling players
That plan is something that United fans have been begging for in many recent windows. You want to sell 10 players but only two or three end up leaving. A huge change is needed.
But there is a reason why it is more difficult at Old Trafford than at Sporting. Not many clubs want to spend so much on underperforming United players on high wages.
Marcus Rashford and Antony have both succeeded on loan this summer but there still feels a level of uncertainty about their sales. For example, Real Betis look unlikely to be able to match the price and wages of their on-loan Brazilian star.
United’s new leadership team need to find a way to overcome the hurdles which have impacted the previous regime selling unwanted players, and then we might be able to see some more positive changes occur at the club.
