Ruben Amorim has already tested out three Man Utd position changes in first training session
Ruben Amorim has already tested out three potential Manchester United position changes in his first training session at Carrington.
Manchester United’s new head coach Ruben Amorim started his role at the club last week but had to wait until Monday to take to the Carrington pitch with his squad.
The Reds face a demanding winter schedule, which includes challenging fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal on the horizon.
Currently positioned 13th in the Premier League, Amorim’s primary focus will be on enhancing the team’s performances and narrowing the gap to the top four, which is only four points away.
With pivotal months ahead in both the Premier League and cup competitions, the Portuguese boss is diligently assessing the squad to identify his strongest starting lineup.
Amorim tests out position changes in training
On Monday evening, the club released a seven-minute video of the squad’s first training session under Amorim.
There were various interesting points throughout, including some personal coaching between Amorim and Kobbie Mainoo.
However, once there was an 11vs11 drill going on, many began to notice which positions players were being used in.
Jonny Evans and Leny Yoro were joined by Luke Shaw in the back three, and that could be a potential new position for the English defender.
Shaw has struggled for fitness and there are question marks over his suitability to a wingback role due to the physical demands needed. However, he could potentially reinvent himself as a wide centre-back under Amorim.
Meanwhile, Casemiro and Mainoo operated in central midfield, with Tyrell Malacia and Antony as the wingbacks in the setup.
That matches Amorim’s tendency to use one winger as a wingback in his 3-4-3 formation. Some have claimed that Antony’s best chance of reviving his United career is as a wingback and that’s exactly how he was being utilised.
Amad Diallo and Mason Mount were the two players behind the striker, who was Marcus Rashford. The no.10 is reportedly set to be given a chance up front under Amorim and this could be the start of that preparation.
While there were limited numbers in training due to the international break, it is still interesting to note how Amorim used Antony, Rashford and Shaw in his opening session.
There is less than a week until the team takes to the pitch against Ipswich Town, and we may start to see some of these potential position changes come into practice.
