After being benched for the Europa League final, Alejandro Garnacho has now been told he can leave Manchester United if one condition is met.
With Manchester United’s worst-ever Premier League season coming to an end this weekend after hosting Aston Villa, a whole host of players will be leaving Old Trafford this summer.
Following their Europa League final heart break with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, Alejandro Garnacho, who was benched for the final, shared his disappointment at not starting, and has now seemingly been given the green light to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Garnacho joins a long list of players that are touted to leave this summer, joining the likes of Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro
United will need to raise as many funds as possible to accomplish the much needed re-build that Ruben Amorim needs to oversee at United.
Garnacho can leave for the right price
Having previously been linked with a move to Napoli in the January transfer window, the two clubs ultimately couldn’t agree on a reasonable fee, seeing Garnacho stay at Old Trafford for the rest of the season.
Now, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, the Argentinian has now been told he can leave the club this summer as long as the right offer comes in. Reports elsewhere have suggested that United’s price tag sits around £60 million.
When asked about Garnacho’s future this week, Amorim said: “I always speak to my players, but the focus now is on the last game. I don’t know what is going to happen.
“We have a plan and we prepared for both situations, with Champions League and without. We have an idea what type of squad we want, but now we have to focus on the last game and we will have time address all of those situations.”
The youngster would demand a big fee considering his talent, with United looking for a figure that would reach their top five record departure fees.
Are United making a mistake in selling Garnacho?
In January, Amorim made it clear that he saw Alejandro Garnacho as a key part of United’s future, openly clashing with INEOS over the club’s uncertainty regarding the young winger’s long-term role.
With a wave of departures expected at Old Trafford this summer, losing Garnacho could be a significant blow, particularly if clubs that are linked with his signature such as Chelsea or Napoli decide to meet United’s new asking price.
Though he has faced criticism for occasional selfish play and inconsistency in his final product, it’s crucial to remember that Garnacho is just 20 years old. At the same age, he has already contributed more goals for United than Cristiano Ronaldo had, underscoring his immense potential.
Should United decide to cash in, the funds would certainly improve their financial flexibility in the transfer market. Still, it raises a difficult question: is selling such a promising talent truly worth it?
If a deal is made, United must insist on including a buy-back clause to ensure they retain the option to bring Garnacho back should he develop into the star many expect him to become.
