Rúben Amorim set to break 69-game Manchester United streak as André Onana decision made vs Newcastle

Rúben Amorim may be set to break a 69-game Manchester United streak as he makes a decision on André Onana’s status against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle United.

United, who currently sit 13th in the league, are without a goal in their last two domestic games but did manage to score twice in a 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon on Thursday.

Rúben Amorim’s men had begun to build some momentum before the March international break, but a loss to Nottingham Forest followed by draws with Manchester City and Lyon have slowed their progress.

They now face a Newcastle side pushing for Champions League qualification. Eddie Howe’s team are 5th in the table and will be looking to tighten their grip on a top-five finish.

Amorim’s Onana decision vs Newcastle

André Onana has come under serious fire at United after his two mistakes against Lyon, with the player having produced a series of error-strung displays in 2025.

Amid his horror form, Amorim has decided to leave Onana out of his travelling squad to face Newcastle United.

Amid Onana’s absence, Altay Bayındır is now set to make his Premier League debut for United over 18 months after he signed for the club.

With the Europa League being a much more important competition for United and the Newcastle tie somewhat of a free hit for Amorim selection-wise, the head coach may be using the Newcastle fixture to see if Bayındır is worth starting in Europe next week.

69-game streak set to be broken

With Amorim selecting Bayındır over Onana, this will break a 69-fixture Premier League streak from Onana, who has played every Premier League game since he signed for United in July 2023.

Bayındır signed later in the same summer, but with Onana having played all 38 games in the competition last season and the 31 fixtures so far this campaign, the Turkish international has never played a Premier League minute.

He has made just seven appearances for United since he joined from Fenerbahce on a five-year contract, but after a stunning performance in the FA Cup against Arsenal in January, fans have been keen to see him given a shot in the Premier League.

They will finally be granted their wish as Bayındır lines up to face Newcastle on Tyneside on Sunday afternoon.
