Ruben Amorim sends clear message to Viktor Gyökeres after Manchester United audition
Ruben Amorim has sent a clear message to Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyökeres following his successful Manchester United audition.
Not many Manchester United managers in the past have been able to make a stronger first impression than new head coach Ruben Amorim did on Tuesday evening.
The soon-to-be United boss demolished Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in their Champions League bout, winning 4-1 in an impressive display during his final home game for the Portuguese club.
After Phil Foden scored the opening goal, Sporting scored four with no response as Viktor Gyökeres bagged another hat-trick.
The former Coventry City striker now has 23 goals so far this season in just 17 appearances. He has excelled under Amorim in Portugal.
United have scored just nine goals in 10 Premier League fixtures so far this season and are one of the worst attacking teams in the division.
Of course, this has led to various rumours that United would be interested in signing the 26-year-old to join Amorim at the club.
Nothing is set to happen in January after the 39-year-old confirmed that he will not be taking any of his Sporting players in the mid-season window.
However, the new United boss has suggested that Gyökeres’ future beyond the season is potentially away from Sporting.
“No, no, no, no!” Amorim laughed after being asked whether he is tempted to bring Gyökeres to Old Trafford with him.
“I cannot be funny with that in this moment. It was tough for me to leave. If I start to joke about that with Gyökeres then I have problems.
“This is my city, this is my country, so I will respect that Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life… maybe he is going somewhere else.”
