Ruben Amorim has revealed what Amad Diallo must improve to succeed in the no.10 role at Manchester United after victory against Viktoria Plzen.

Manchester United’s performance on Thursday was uninspiring for much of the match, hindered by frequent errors from Ruben Amorim’s side.

Sloppy play defined the first half, preventing the Reds from building momentum as the teams went into the break tied 0-0.

Early in the second half, Viktoria Plzen capitalised on a major mistake by André Onana to take a surprise lead.

The goal seemed to energise Amorim’s team, who improved significantly with the help of his five second-half substitutes.

Rasmus Højlund emerged as the hero, scoring twice off the bench to clinch a crucial victory for the Reds in the Europa League.

What Amad must improve

Amad Diallo started the game as one of the two no.10s in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. It was the first time he started in the position under the new head coach.

The Ivorian has been excelling at right wingback but his long-term future looks set to be in the frontline.

But he did have a poor first half performance, like many of his teammates. In the second half, he picked it up and created the opening goal while being a danger in the closing stages.

Amorim believes that Amad has a future in that role but claimed that Amad cannot drop too deep to pick up the ball like he did in the first half of the game.

“He can be a good player in that position,” the boss told reporters. “We need left-footed players in this team to play that role.

“In the first half, he was coming for the ball too much. He need to play near the opposition defence more.

“He will improve in the future for sure.”

It seemed only natural that after playing so many games in a deeper position that Amad would drop into those positions.

But in order to get the most out of Amad going forward, he must be able to pick the ball up in more dangerous positions like he did towards the end of the game.

It will certainly be interesting to see how his minutes are split between wingback and no.10 for the rest of the season.
