Rúben Amorim has clarified his message behind his “players spoke really loudly” comments in the aftermath of the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
Manchester United suffered an embarrassing defeat in their first and only Carabao Cup match of the season, losing on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town after being dominated in the game itself.
Bryan Mbeumo – who scored the first goal for United – missed his second penalty of the shootout to send Rúben Amorim’s side back to Manchester and out of the cup in an incredibly disappointing fashion.
After the match, Amorim was asked about his team’s performance and he simply chose to say that “the players spoke really loudly” before apologising to the fans for the shocking result.
As the squad prepare for this weekend’s match at home to newly promoted Burnley, the United manager was asked to clarify what his comments meant after speculation surrounding his future arose.
Amorim reveals message behind his comments
In the pre-match press conference for United’s game against Burnley, Amorim was asked about what his reaction after the Grimsby match meant.
“I know that when I speak these things [calling them out], guys to be really honest with you,” said Amorim.
“Every time that we have or have in the future one defeat like that [Grimsby], I’m going to be like that, I’m going to say that sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players.
“I think I cannot [change] this is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that and I felt that in the in that moment I was so frustrated and annoying and I know again that you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media to be more constant to be more calm I’m not going to be like that.
“I’m trying to accept that, and I’m going to be who I am, and that’s why I have the passion that I have, and in that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed.
Amorim continued to say: “I felt that we had a very good pre-season, we were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played. We played badly [for] 30 minutes against Fulham, and then that kind of performance, I was really disappointed with everything, but now it’s a new game and I’m focused on the next game.”
Amorim sticks to his guns
Amorim has come under lots of pressure since his side lost to Grimsby in the Carabo Cup, but he today showed that he will stick to his guns and not change from who he is.

If he wants to be passionate, he will be. If he wants to call out his players, he will. If he wants to play his formation and system, he will. This type of character hasn’t been seen at Old Trafford since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson.
While he may not be the right man to take United back to the top, we will never find out if he is if he is sacked too early, like so many managers before him.
It is time to get behind the manager.
