Altay Bayindir had a really difficult game on Thursday evening as Manchester United lost to Tottenham Hotpsur in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in a game filled with strange mistakes.

Six of the seven goals scored in the game were from individual player mistakes. Fraser Forster made two incredible blunders for Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo’s goals.

However, on United’s side, it was Altay Bayindir and Lisandro Martinez who made the defensive mistakes for all four Spurs goals, which ultimately made it a mountain to climb for Ruben Amorim’s side.

At one point, despite initially going 3-0 down, it looked inevitable that United would score an equaliser late in the game but Bayindir allowed Son Heung-min’s corner to go directly in the back of the net just before added time.

The Turkish goalkeeper was convinced that he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall in the box, but VAR was not being used on the night, and his fury looked like it was mixed with a hint of embarrassment that he was unable to take his chance on the night.

Amorim refutes Bayindir apology claim after Spurs defeat

It was Bayindir’s first start under Amorim and likely his final appearance for the club, considering the rumours surrounding his exit.

Despite the bizarre goal he conceded at the end of the game, Bayindir was defended by Amorim after the game, who stressed that the goalkeeper did not need to apologise to the team.

“No, he doesn’t have to do that,” said Amorim when asked whether Bayindir had apologised for conceding directly from a corner.

“He has to focus. We will see the game, and we will improve every player of this team. We win together, lose together. It is not the individual; it is the team.”

Amorim has made it clear since joining the Old Trafford club that he will not throw any players under the bus and this was another example of that.

Being a back-up keeper is a tough task

You almost have to feel sorry for Bayindir after that display. While many argue that being a goalkeeper is the toughest position on the pitch, perhaps being the back-up is even more difficult.

We have seen previously how well a second-choice goalie can perform at Old Trafford, with Sergio Romero being somewhat of a cult hero for the club.

But he managed to make 61 appearances for United over six years. In contrast, Bayindir has played four games for the club since he signed in the summer of 2023.

As a footballer, you need some consistency to get up to speed and that seems like it would ring true even more for goalkeepers, and when they make a mistake it is much more high profile.

Bayindir has been unable to get any sort of consistent game-time in cup competitions at United and it seems like an exit makes sense for him in his career.

United fans have never really been able to find out what kind of goalkeeper he is, but he may be able to showcase it elsewhere.
