Ruben Amorim proven immediately correct about “excellent” Man Utd star as prediction comes true
Ruben Amorim’s prediction about Rasmus Højlund has been proven immediately correct after the Manchester United striker scored for Denmark on Thursday night.
Manchester United forward Rasmus Højlund clinched a crucial win for Denmark with a late goal against Portugal in their Nations League quarter-final first leg.
After enduring a 21-game drought for United and 13 goalless matches for Denmark, Højlund finally broke his dry spell last week—then did it again on the international stage, with his performance described as “excellent” by Danish media.
Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes started for Portugal, while Christian Eriksen featured for Denmark. Højlund, initially on the bench, came on to deliver the decisive goal.
After netting the decisive goal, the United striker pulled out the iconic “siuu”—right in front of Cristiano Ronaldo himself, with Højlund claiming that it was a mark of respect to the legendary striker.
Amorim proven right about Højlund as prediction comes true
Ruben Amorim would have been very pleased to see Højlund on the scoresheet against Portugal and it comes after the Portuguese boss received criticism from continuing to back the Dane.
Despite there being a lack of alternatives, Højlund could have very easily been taken out of the team months ago but the United boss values some of the attributes he brings away from goalscoring.
Amorim also predicted that Højlund’s biggest problem is that he just needed to score one goal to allow the floodgates to open.
“He just needs to score a goal,” Amorim told TNT Sports after the recent victory over Real Sociedad, where Højlund was somehow unable to score.
“He is so anxious when the ball is bouncing in the box, you can see it in his body. He is going to score one, he deserves it.
“Because we play with two No. 10s, we need one player to make runs and push the team. Today, he made a few connections which allowed us to do that.”
After the 22-year-old broke that goalless run against Leicester City, Amorim suggested that he will return to the international break with confidence, which seems even more likely now after his goal against Portugal.
“It is a difficult goal, a difficult control [with] the right foot. So it’s a shame we are going to stop for [the] national teams,” the United boss said.
“But he will return with confidence. It’s [also] just one win away and we have to continue when we return.”
Højlund needs to end the season well
Højlund has the opportunity to turn his season around completely in the coming weeks, with United set to try and climb back up the Premier League table.
More importantly, the Reds have a crucial Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon next month and Højlund hitting form at the right time could give the Reds a huge boost for those games.
Things are seeming to click more at Old Trafford under Amorim in recent weeks and an in-form striker will only help that situation.
Højlund has to learn to become more consistent as a player and not rely on his confidence in a goalscoring spree like he has done previously. But right now, United could do with that kind of hot-form.
