Rúben Amorim potentially set to reunite with Sporting CP ‘wonder-kid’ amid next transfer priority

With the January window not so far away, more rumours have begun to circulate regarding what potential activity Manchester United may have, with the latest suggesting manager Rúben Amorim could be set for a reunion with a familiar face.

Following a successful summer transfer window, which saw incomings of huge attacking names in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško, as well as the arrival of Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens, United have seemingly been able to plug a lot of weak areas in the squad.

With the team’s forward line only being able to accumulate 26 Premier League goals by the end of last season, it was clear that this was an area that Manchester United needed to prioritise heading into the 2025/26 season.

However, now that these holes have presumably been plugged, and the January window is just around the corner, it appears United could be about to begin an overhaul of another position in the squad that is deemed to be lacking in real quality, and one that is especially vital to the potential success of Rúben Amorim’s three at the back system.

Man Utd eyeing Sporting wonderkid

The wingback position is one most fans will admit is not the strongest. It does not currently offer a strong selection of options, especially for a system that relies heavily on that position for offensive output.

According to reports coming in from TeamTalk, United are looking to address this, as it appears that the club have identified Sporting CP wingback Maxi Araujo as a strong contender to re-unite with Amorim in the near future.

With it alleged that United have been scouting the young Uruguayan for the past 12 months, with United scouts reportedly spotted at numerous games, a potential move to Manchester could truly be on the cards.

It is said that Amorim would be more than happy for Araujo to join, having previously managed him at Sporting, with the 25-year-old believed to be a perfect fit for what his system requires.

Following the recent struggles of current United wingback Patrick Dorgu, it is believed that Araujo would be able to come in and soon compete for a starting spot in the team, despite United only signing the Danish leftback last January.

How would Araujo fit in?

As previously mentioned, Araujo would most likely be competing with Patrick Dorgu for the left wing-back position in Rúben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

With the Uruguayan already having immense experience with the system in Sporting under Amorim, he, in theory, should be more than able to slot into United’s first team, being able to offer a solid attacking and defensive output, with the existing knowledge of what Amorim expects from the position.

However, it may not all be as simple as that. If Araujo were to join United in January or the summer, there is obviously still no guarantee he will be a success. Sometimes the transition from Portuguese football to the Premier League can be tough, as seen by Manuel Ugarte and Viktor Gyökeres

But nevertheless, if United were to go ahead with the signing of the young Uruguayan, it would certainly be an exciting addition to Amorim’s squad, and one that could hopefully take United on the next step back to the top.
