Ruben Amorim names two Manchester United legends he would have “loved” to play alongside
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is currently one of the youngster managers in the Premier League following his early retirement from football at the age of 32.
When Manchester United announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim, much was made of the fact that he is only 39 years of age.
That is only two years older than Jonny Evans, who has so far made two appearances under the Portuguese boss. They played each other back in 2012 when United played Braga.
Amorim was a midfielder during his career and played for Belenenses, Benfica, Braga and Al-Wakrah.
In 2017, the United boss ended his career early due to injuries and immediately started preparing to take up management in the following year.
Amorim names United legends he wished he played with
During an interview with the Premier League, Amorim was asked which legend he wished he got the opportunity to play alongside when he was still on the field.
“[Eric] Cantona… that should be fun,” laughed Amorim.
However, being a central midfielder, Amorim was not able to only name a striker and wanted to add someone who could compliment him in the middle.
Being more of a technical player, the 39-year-old said he would have ‘loved’ to play alongside Roy Keane in the engine room, joking that the club legend would be able to do all of the work for him.
“But I was a midfielder, I would love to have played with Roy Keane,” the United boss added.
“He does all the job and I can focus on playing with the ball! I think it would be fun, that would be good.”
Amorim’s clear appreciation for ‘real star’ Keane
Amorim’s appreciation for former United captain Keane has been clear ever since his first game at United.
After drawing 1-1 to Ipswich Town, Amorim’s post-match interview was hijacked by Ed Sheeran, the singer-songwriter and minority shareholder at Portman Road.
The media asked the United boss whether he was bothered by the incident, after he claimed that he had done more media work within one week at United than his entire time at Sporting Lisbon.
“I think you sometimes over complicate things. It was nothing,” he replied.
“I just was thinking about the game, and I was with Roy Keane. Roy Keane is the real star in that panel! So, for me, it was really, really OK. It was nothing special.”
