Ruben Amorim should now reverse one of Manchester United’s transfer decisions after they pulled out of the race for one goalscorer this summer.
Manchester United are trying to improve their forward line this summer after goalscoring was a huge issue at Old Trafford last term.
Matheus Cunha has been signed and it looks like the Reds are trying to bring Bryan Mbeumo through the door as well.
Liam Delap was the main target for the striker position, partly due to his attractive £30 million release clause, but he opted to join Chelsea instead.
Viktor Gyokeres then seemed like the priority target but the Sporting striker appears to be favouring a move to Arsenal this summer, rather than to Old Trafford.
Amorim must reverse United decision
With some of their more favoured targets unlikely now, United will be assessing the different striker options on the market.
According to recent reports, the Reds pulled out of the race to sign Jonathan David on a free transfer this summer even though his preference is a move to the Premier League.
David has become one of the most reliable goalscorers in France, with 146 goals in his career so far and it isn’t clear why United are not going in for him.
But after the rejection of Delap and the likelihood of signing Gyokeres being low, it seems like a no-brainer for United to test the waters with David and see if a deal can still be done.
David might not be the striker to take United back to the top of the Premier League but he would be very useful to take them closer to that point.
David signing would allow cash to be spent elsewhere
It is common knowledge that United do not have tons of cash to spare this summer, which makes low-cost signings like David even more appealing, and it is strange how United haven’t even attempted a move.
Of course the striker position is important at Old Trafford, but with £120 million potentially being spent on Cunha and Mbeumo, there are going to be extra goals in the team.
That should allow Amorim and United to take a calculated risk with the striker addition, and that would give the club more money to spend in midfield or at wingback.
Despite how poor the attack was last season, it might seem slightly excessive to spend almost £200 million on three players for those positions when other roles also need upgrading in.
