Rúben Amorim has been told he has got one Manchester United star’s position change correct after great performances from a previously berated star.

Manchester United’s players this season have found it hard to put together strings of good form amid the changes to systems and staff.

While some players thrived in Erik ten Hag’s system, such as Matthijs de Ligt and Alejandro Garnacho, they have found it hard to adjust to the demands of Rúben Amorim, with some good performances mixed into patches of bad displays.

Similarly, even those who have thrived under Amorim, such as Lisandro Martínez and Amad, had their patches of dud from this campaign, with these two now out for the remainder of the season.

Others, like Bruno Fernandes and Noussair Mazraoui, who are often dependable regardless of their position, have still had strings of games that have brought criticism.

Amorim has got one position change right

One player who was heavily critiqued for his football at the beginning of the season was Joshua Zirkzee, who many thought would be leaving United soon after joining after failing to embed in the squad.

However, since Amorim took over, Zirkzee has slowly adjusted his role to become a right-attacking midfielder rather than a striker, and his performances have been getting better and better, with the player key in recent comeback wins despite not scoring.

This position change is one that has vastly improved the player, and former Manchester United centre-back Gary Pallister told Casino Apps that, as Zirkzee is not a striker, he must play deeper.

“Since the day the fans cheered when Zirkzee was taken off, I think United have really tried to help him and he’s starting to feel that love,” Pallister said.

“That said, Zirkzee is not a number nine. He’s a player that needs to play deeper to get involved in the game, I don’t think he can lead the line.

“He’s had some good moments, and some bad moments, but I don’t really know what to make of him yet. He’s certainly improved from his shaky start to the season, though.”

Zirkzee may still have to play up front

However, despite Zirkzee’s good form on the right, there will still come times this season where he may have to be deployed as a striker.

Rasmus Højlund, the club’s No. 9, has not scored in his last 18 appearances, with many calling for the player to be dropped and 17-year-old Chido Obi to be handed his first start.

However, Obi is not registered to play in the Europa League for the club this season, meaning should Amorim choose to rest Højlund for a game in Europe, Zirkzee would likely have to lead the line.

Even if Amorim rests Højlund for a domestic fixture, the chances that Obi will start that game are still slim, meaning Zirkzee will still have to be called upon to play up front at points this season.
