Ruben Amorim has named his Europa League squad for the upcoming knockout fixtures, with the Reds facing Real Sociedad in the round-of-16.

Manchester United face a crucial Europa League showdown against Real Sociedad this week, with their season hanging in the balance.

On Sunday night, they suffered a heartbreaking FA Cup exit, losing to Fulham on penalties in the fifth round.

Ruben Amorim’s side sit 14th in the Premier League, far from the European qualification spots, making the Europa League their only realistic shot at silverware—and a pathway to the Champions League.

A tough challenge awaits in the round of 16, with the first leg of their clash against Real Sociedad set to take place in Spain this Thursday.

United makes changes to Europa League squad

United’s updated squad list for the Europa League ahead of the knockout stages has been confirmed ahead of the upcoming clash.

The Reds had registered their initial list for the league phase of the competition – which they ended unbeaten – at the start of the season but are able to make three changes mid-way through the competition.

This allows for new signings or emerging players to be moved into the squad list, and that is exactly what United have done for Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.

Both of those players joined the club in the January transfer window and have been included in United’s new squad list. Dorgu is available to play these games despite receiving a red card against Ipswich Town as that ban only applies for domestic competition.

However, on the other hand, United have not included Chido Obi in their squad list for the competition, meaning he will be unavailable to face Real Sociedad.

Obi has emerged as a first-team option in recent weeks due to a variety of reasons, including a short squad, injuries and Rasmus Højlund’s dire form.

United fans were calling for the teenager to start in this game but United submitted their list before the 17-year-old became an option in the first-team squad.

Obi is also ineligible to be included in matchday squads through the B-List, which most Academy players can be included through. United have done so with Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

However, UEFA rules state that only “club-trained players born on or after 1 January 2003, who have been with their employers for an uninterrupted period of a minimum of two years, are allowed to be considered for selection” on the B-List.

Since Obi had only joined the club from Arsenal in the summer, he is not able to join the group from the B-List and will instead be awaiting his next opportunity in the Premier League.
