Rúben Amorim must consider signing one midfielder Manchester United have reportedly been “offered” this week amid struggles in the middle of the park.
Manchester United are planning to strengthen their midfield this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to address ongoing struggles in the centre of the pitch.
Creativity has been a persistent issue for United this season, with the team often failing to break down defences and rarely scoring more than once per game. Their inconsistent form at Old Trafford has only heightened concerns over their lack of control in midfield.
In January, the club sanctioned several loan departures, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.
Further midfield changes are expected in the summer, with Christian Eriksen set to leave when his contract expires and Casemiro no longer part of Amorim’s long-term plans.
As a result, United are preparing for a key summer transfer window, targeting midfielders who can provide greater creativity, energy, and tactical discipline to fit Amorim’s system.
United “offered” Barcelona’s De Jong
According to a report from CaughtOffside, United have been “offered” the chance to sign 27-year-old Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.
The report states that United are one of multiple sides who have been contacted via intermediaries and informed of his availability in the coming transfer window.
Premier League sides Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City have all been alerted to the Dutchman’s possible departure from Camp Nou, who may be open to leaving if he does not feel valued by manager Hansi Flick this summer.
His current contract with the La Liga outfit is set to expire in 2026, and with Barcelona likely not wanting to lose him for free this summer, they would reportedly be willing to listen to offers of around £30-35 million.
Amorim must consider signing De Jong
United have a chequered history with De Jong following a drawn-out transfer saga in the 2022 transfer window.
Then-manager Erik ten Hag was very keen on adding the player to his midfield ranks with United reportedly reaching an agreement with Barcelona for the £72 million transfer of the player, although he himself refused to join and a deal broke down.

However, with Christian Eriksen leaving Old Trafford this summer and Casemiro likely to be sold, De Jong would bring experience, calmness, and control to the midfield, something Amorim desperately needs.
The transfer fee mentioned above is a fairly reasonable price for a player of his quality, but there may be a problem regarding his wages which could deter United.
De Jong earns around £ 300,000 a week at Barcelona before tax, which is likely much more than United would be willing to offer, with the club looking to trim their current wage bill and stop handing out bloated contracts.
