Rúben Amorim is finally seeing one Manchester United star start to flourish at Old Trafford, and his bounce in form comes at a perfect time.

Ruben Amorim’s arrival as Manchester United boss in November was a shock to the system for many, bringing a system distinctly different to what both fans and players are used to.

One player who faced initial struggles was his compatriot Diogo Dalot, who was forced to play in an unnatural left wing-back position due to a lack of natural options there. Even on the right, he looked less comfortable as a wing-back than a full-back.

Many fans felt he would be one the club would look at moving on this summer as a highly-rated player and sellable asset who didn’t quite fit the system. But one of Dalot’s key traits is his mentality, and this is part of why United’s managers have valued him so much.

This mindset has allowed him to adapt to several different situations already in his career, and recent weeks have shown this trend to continue as he starts to find his feet playing as a wing-back for Amorim.

Goal contributions are coming through

In recent weeks, Dalot has gotten an assist from the left against Fulham, scored a goal against Real Sociedad, and got an assist once he was moved to his more natural right-hand side last weekend at the King Power Stadium.

With the wing-backs being a key part of the way Amorim’s United attack, as the main one-against-one players out wide, providing output from these positions is key.

It is one of the reasons that United looked better with Amad – a winger – as the right wing-back and why a lot of recruitment talk for those positions has been around wingers.

But Dalot is also starting to step it up in that regard, becoming more decisive when he gets into crossing positions out wide.

Before, the 26-year-old looked hesitant in one-against-one situations and delayed taking his man on or delivering the ball into the box in situations where you would want him to do so. However, he showed he can do so following an “impressive” performance against Liverpool in January.

He also had issues with decision-making, often not playing the right balls. His assists against Fulham and Leicester showed much sharper, faster decision-making, and they made a clear positive difference in United’s attack.

He has also developed very good movement in the final third to be a goal threat, something that emerged under Erik ten Hag, and this adds to what he can do from those positions, as seen against La Real with his goal.

A valuable squad player?

Diogo Dalot is clearly valued highly by Amorim, he has barely missed any minutes for him since he took over and has been spoken highly of by the manager.

Now that he is picking up form and finding his feet in this system, it feels unlikely that United would entertain the prospect of a sale.

The Portuguese full back is consistently available, trains excellently, has a wide skillset, always gives his all on the pitch, and can play a number of different positions comfortably.

He also has an elite mindset which helps to push standards higher, something that is needed at United.

Dalot is beginning to find some of the form that saw him become so highly rated under Erik ten Hag can only be a good thing for him, and given Amorim rates him significantly, it looks as though he is going to be a key player for Manchester United in their new era under Amorim now that he can be played on the right flank more often.
