Ruben Amorim’s transfer demand at Manchester United must be fast-tracked after Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on the situation.

Ruben Amorim drew his first game as Manchester United boss against Ipswich Town on the weekend.

He has only had several days on the training pitch with many players but there are some conclusions that are already starting to get drawn.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are planning to sign a new left-back in 2025 to fit Amorim’s system.

The 39-year-old has started to implement a 3-4-3 formation that relies heavily on wingbacks.

However, concerns over the fitness and durability of current options Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have prompted the club to explore alternatives.

Diogo Dalot started the game against Ipswich Town at left wingback but did not look entirely comfortable in the role, especially going forward.

Romano reports that United are already evaluating potential targets, with a shortlist of over three candidates.

Former United player Álvaro Fernández has been linked with a return, while Real Madrid target Alphonso Davies is also reportedly under consideration.

The decision on whether to pursue a left-back in the January transfer window or wait until the summer is still undecided, Romano concludes, though a summer move is considered the most likely option.

This will need to change for Amorim, who has limited options in the position. We saw how key the role can be in the 90 minutes played already.

Buying a left wingback will also have a healthy knock-on effect, allowing Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot to both be options at either right wingback or right centre-back.

Dalot has played over 40 consecutive games for the club, while Mazraoui has had prior experience with injury issues.

If both players need to continue starting most games due to the lack of a quality left-sided option, then there could be concerns.

Harry Amass being promoted is one potential option but re-signing someone like Fernandez in the January transfer window makes a lot of sense in terms of finance and football.

The former United academy defender would cost very little, with a £16 million buyback clause inserted in his Benfica deal, while offering a great option for the left wingback role.

Some transfers can definitely wait until the summer, but the early signs suggest that buying a left wingback should be a priority for the club in two months’ time.
