Ruben Amorim has made fresh plans for Marcus Rashford in Manchester United’s new-look 3-4-3 system to help the forward ‘rediscover his best form’

Ruben Amorim will properly start his tenure at Manchester United when the team travel to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League later this month.

In the meantime, the new United head coach has time to assess the players he has available at Carrington and make decisions on who fits where in his new-look system.

The 39-year-old is expected to immediately implement the 3-4-3 system which brought his Sporting side so much success in recent years.

Whether it’s the three centre-backs, the wingbacks or the two no.10 players; there are several contentious decisions to be made regarding the swap.

Amorim has several wingers who might need to find a new home in the team. Amad Diallo, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford are most comfortable on the flanks as wingers, however, the new formation doesn’t exactly fit them in.

The closest two positions are the wingbacks – who do push on and attack more than you’d expect – or the inside forwards/no.10s.

Amad and Garnacho are young enough to mould while Antony’s future at the club is in the air regardless. 27-year-old Rashford’s position has been under question.

Some have argued that we might see the best out of the Englishman playing in one of those positions behind the striker, almost like an inside forward where he enjoyed playing under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Others are of the opinion that the club’s no.10 doesn’t quite fit there either.

According to a new report from GiveMeSport, Amorim is prepared to test the forward out in the lone-striker role, providing him a chance to impress him in the early fixtures.

Rashford has previously played as a no.9 but there have always been question marks about his suitability to the position.

Though, insiders who are familiar with Amorim’s tactics believe that this will be the most likely initial position for the Academy graduate. Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have not excelled so far this season, with three goals between them.

The belief is that the new head coach wants his centre-forward to attack the channels and space behind the opposition’s backline in transition and he believes Rashford has those characteristics.

With this change, there is hope that Rashford can discover his best form after a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign.

So far this term, Rashford has four goals and three assists in 18 appearances. He will feel unfortunate to not have more assists, but ultimately has not been impacting games enough considering his ability.

Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag’s best moments at Old Trafford came with Rashford flying in attack; time will tell whether the same will be true with Amorim.
