Ruben Amorim is now reportedly ‘pushing’ to sign Viktor Gyökeres at Manchester United this summer but his latest comments are now confusing.
Manchester United are looking to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer, with a strong emphasis on strengthening their attacking lineup.
After enduring a difficult season in front of goal, the Reds are actively scouting potential signings to resolve their scoring woes.
Matheus Cunha has been identified as a prime candidate for the left-sided No.10 role, while Liam Delap is reportedly the preferred option to spearhead the attack.
Additionally, reports indicate that United are also eyeing reinforcements for the right-sided No.10 position, with multiple names being linked to further elevate their offensive threat.
Amorim ‘pushing’ to sign Gyökeres at United
In terms of the centre-forward, it has been regularly reported that Delap is the favoured option at United, with the Ipswich Town striker available for £30 million.
Despite those rumours surrounding Delap, a new report reveals that the club is now preparing to compete with Arsenal for Sporting star Viktor Gyökeres.
The prolific striker is someone United head coach Amorim knows intimately, having scored an impressive 66 goals in 68 appearances under his management at Sporting.
According to the latest reports, Amorim is now pushing for a reunion with the striker to help fix the goalscoring issues at Old Trafford.
Gyökeres also remains a key target for Arsenal as they search for a new striker, and he is reportedly available for £58.5 million this summer — a significant £25 million less than his release clause.
Amorim’s latest Gyökeres comments are now confusing
While it isn’t entirely surprising that Amorim wants to link up with his former striker again, there is one confusing part of the transfer chase after the Portuguese coach’s recent comments in the media.
Various reports have made it clear that Gyökeres would only consider a move to Old Trafford if they are able to secure Champions League football for next season.
When this was brought up during an interview with Sport TV Portugal earlier this month, Amorim was extremely clear in his response that he does not want players who would only come if they are in the Champions League.
“Gyokeres deal? I didn’t talk to him,” Amorim told the Portuguese outlet before United’s first-leg clash against Athletic Club in the Europa League semi-final.
“But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”
Despite such a strong stance, perhaps Amorim’s viewpoint has changed due to the persistent issues up front for United, or Gyökeres might even be willing to make the move if United lose against Spurs in the Europa League final. We are going to have to wait and see.
