Rúben Amorim is reportedly pushing United to do “whatever it takes” to hijack a £67 million transfer this summer despite the player’s preference to sign elsewhere.
Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United revolution is off to a blistering start, with the club sealing a £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves on the first day of the transfer window.
Just 24 hours later, reports emerged that Bryan Mbeumo wants to join United, turning down interest from Newcastle, Arsenal and Spurs.
The momentum continued as Bruno Fernandes rejected a huge offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal, choosing to stay and lead the project at Old Trafford.
With two major signings lining up and their captain fully committed, United must now focus on sales to clear the way for what comes next, with the club desperate to secure a new striker this summer, too.
Amorim urging United to secure transfer hijack
Many strikers have been linked with the club in the last month or so, with Victor Osimhen, Liam Delap, and Viktor Gyökeres being the three big names United reportedly had on their shortlist.
However, with Delap signing for Chelsea and Osimhen’s wage and contract demands being far too high for United to consider, this has left the club with Gyökeres as the only possible target from their initial list.
But reports from Portugal have stated that the Swedish international, who scored 66 goals in 68 games under Amorim at Sporting CP, has chosen Arsenal as his preferred destination this summer.
In a twist, the Portuguese outlet A Bola has stated that despite Gyökeres’ decision, Amorim still has a “faint hope” that he will be able to persuade the Swede to sign for United this summer.
Despite Arsenal holding a meeting with the player earlier this week and A Bola reporting that the London club are preparing an offer, United are “promising to do whatever it takes” to secure the 27-year-old instead.
Gyökeres may be too much for United to afford
On Wednesday morning, Sporting president Frederico Varandas announced that reports stating the club would be happy to accept a package of around £60 million for Gyökeres this summer were false, with subsequent reports detailing that a more realistic price is £67 million.
United’s funds are limited this summer, with Cunha and Mbeumo to take up their entire initial budget if the latter’s move goes through.
United want to offload over £150 million worth of players, with Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho set to move on, but this may still not be enough funding to commit to Gyökeres.
Amorim is said to want a new midfielder and possibly a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2025/26 season, and their funding may not stretch far enough to sign a premium striker like Gyökeres as well as secure further quality additions in these areas.
