Ruben Amorim ‘impressed’ by Man Utd starlet in training, coaches think he could ‘make history’ this season
Ruben Amorim has been ‘impressed’ by one Manchester United starlet in training and coaches think that he could ‘make history’ this season.
Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach earlier this month and he has been getting to work behind the scenes.
After drawing his first Premier League outing 1-1 against Ipswich Town, Amorim won in the Europa League against Bodø/Glimt this week.
It is well known that the 39-year-old head coach likes to work and develop young players and he’s wasted no time in doing the same at Old Trafford.
Godwill Kukonki has participated in first-team training at Carrington since Amorim took over and the centre-back was included in the final session before the Bodø/Glimt win.
According to MailSport, the 16-year-old defender has really caught the eye of Amorim and his coaching staff in training.
He was left out of the U19s squad for the first leg of a UEFA Youth League qualifier against AZ Alkmaar this week so that he could stay in Manchester and train with Amorim’s squad.
The report adds that Kukonki represents a valuable project for Amorim, who uses three centre-backs in his system, and that there is a feeling at Carrington that the Academy starlet could go on to make history for the club.
It was explained that no defender has ever played for the club in the Premier League before their 18th birthday.
Kukonki does not turn 17 until February which means that he could potentially blow that record out of the water if he continues to impress Amorim.
There have regularly been defensive injuries at Old Trafford over the last year, and that could be how the youngster pounces on an opportunity.
Of course, Noussair Mazraoui has also showed his abilities in the back three against Ipswich but there is definitely a chance for Kukonki to make his debut if things fall into place.
