Rúben Amorim has told Man Utd board 8-word message during January transfer ‘conversations’, says Fabrizio Romano

Rúben Amorim has already started talks with Manchester United’s hierarchy surrounding their January transfer window strategy.

Manchester United strengthened Rúben Amorim’s squad with four first-team additions in the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha arrived to bolster the attack, while Senne Lammens also came in to provide competition in goal.

Even after spending more than £200 million, the squad still has gaps to fill, and United are already turning their attention to the 2026 winter and summer windows.

Midfield remains the most pressing issue, as the club once again failed to resolve their ongoing problems in that area.

Amorim sends eight-word transfer message

Amorim spoke with local media last week, where he was asked if he wanted to sign players in the January transfer window. The United head coach replied by stating that the club would not be making any short-term moves.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Amorim has also reiterated this in private to the club’s board, while confirming that conversations within the club regarding January reinforcements are already underway.

“Ruben Amorim sends clear indications in public and in private for Manchester United in the January transfer window. Because in private, the conversations have started between Amorim [and] the board,” Romano commented on YouTube.

“In general, Amorim and the board are talking about the January window; the opportunities, the players who want to play more: Kobbie Mainoo [and] Joshua Zirkzee. For Zirkzee, there are West Ham and Roma in recent weeks.

“Amorim sends a clear message, also in public, talking about the January window. First of all, he says: ‘The window will be open, there is a possibility we will do something.’ – so not closing the doors to the opportunities to bring in new players. Also, he says, ‘I don’t want players for the short term.’

“Amorim is not in for bringing in a player for just a few months. A player will join Manchester United if they believe the player could be an option for the long term.”

United will be prioritising defence

With last summer seeing United spending plenty of cash on a new attack, the coming two windows will no doubt instead be focused on bringing in better defensive players to make sure United aren’t leaking goals.

The back line has looked more assured since Lammens started playing, with the goalkeeper recording three wins and a draw in his first four appearances, but there is still a lot of work to do.

Casemiro has been crucial for United this season, but his contract is set to expire in the summer. Even if he remains, his minutes will inevitably dwindle over time, making a new defensive midfielder a high priority.

At the same time, Harry Maguire’s current deal is also set to expire in June 2026, with Luke Shaw’s ending 12 months later.

Amorim will want to bring in new, quick, and technically gifted defenders to continue rebuilding his squad across the next two transfer windows.
