Ruben Amorim’s first Manchester United transfer move has been revealed, with Liverpool’s interest seemingly forcing his hand.

Manchester United’s chiefs welcomed Ruben Amorim to the club’s training ground on Monday afternoon, where he would start his duties as head coach.

The 39-year-old met with members of the playing squad on the following day and will start thinking about who fits into his plans with the new 3-4-3 formation.

Many players could excel in the system but it seems likely that the Portuguese boss will need additions in upcoming transfer windows to be able to show his best football.

According to a new report from Correio da Manhã, as per Sports Witness, Amorim wants to bring Alvaro Fernandez back to Old Trafford.

It was claimed that one of Amorim’s first moves in the January transfer window could be activating the buyback clause in his contract at Benfica, which is said to be around £16 million.

The former Academy starlet at Carrington has been attracting interest from elsewhere following his impressive performances at Benfica.

Liverpool are one of the club’s monitoring his situation and the report adds that their ‘real’ interest in the 21-year-old could act as a catalyst for Amorim to push United into re-signing the Spaniard.

United have a clear advantage over their rivals and other clubs interested in the left-back due to the buyback clause they inserted in his deal in Portugal.

Other clubs would be forced to pay over £40 million to sign Fernandez as Benfica have a £42m release clause for the player.

Although, as mentioned earlier, United could bring him back for less than £20m and that would make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons.

United have had problems at left-back in recent years, with uncertainty now around Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness to play in Amorim’s wingback role.

Meanwhile, Fernandez has proven his credentials to play in that exact role at Benfica and whilst on loan at Preston North End in the 2022/23 campaign, where he was elected their Young Player of the Year.

With a lack of finances for big-money transfers in January, the modest price to bring the Benfica starlet back to the club will surely be an attraction for those at Old Trafford.

Fernandez failed to make his competitive debut for United during his time at the club, but would undoubtably have an important role if he returned in the mid-season window.
