Ruben Amorim has explained the “really important” message that he told the Manchester United players ahead of their clash with Manchester City. It should get the fans excited.
Manchester United’s fourth game of the new Premier League season sees them make the short trip to their local rivals, Manchester City, as they look to secure back-to-back victories.
Ruben Amorim’s side have yet to secure consecutive league wins under the Portuguese tactician’s reign, but they will be hoping to change this on Sunday.
Unfortunately for the Reds, new signing Matheus Cunha will be ruled out of the tie, alongside Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot, who also miss out through injury.
Ahead of the highly anticipated derby, Amorim has explained the “really important” message that he has given to his players, which has every reason to excite the United fans.
Amorim’s important message
When speaking to the club’s media team, United’s Portuguese manager spoke about his Sunday opposition and explained how his side will nullify the threat of Pep Guardiola’s side.
Amorim said, “I think City has that way of playing with a lot of possession. They change a lot the way they build up, and that is a problem to press, but we focus a lot on our team.
“We have a way of defending that we can adapt to different systems, and we need to have the ball also.
“That is really important because we play with the ball and we showed that in the last game, so we cannot face City thinking about just in transitions or trying to steal the ball. We can have the ball, and we will try to do that.”
United to take the game to City
Given the influx of quality in the United squad, it is no surprise that Amorim believes that his side can take the game to City and showcase their class.
Despite both Cunha and Mount being missing in action, we can expect Kobbie Mainoo to finally enter the lineup, which will be a crucial addition if the Reds are to focus their game around ball retention.

This will definitely be an interesting approach for United against such high-calibre opposition, but given the struggling start of their local rivals, it could be a successful approach.
It is no secret that United’s fierce rivals have started the season incredibly slowly, so it will be interesting to see whether they can take the game to their opponents on Sunday.
