Ruben Amorim explains 130-word solution to Manchester United’s problem that drives fans mad
Ruben Amorim explained the perfect solution to one of the problems at Manchester United that has driven fans mad in recent years.
Manchester United fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening in the Carabao Cup.
It felt like an unjust cup exit for Ruben Amorim’s side, who were clearly the better team on the night but fell to a clinical Spurs team.
However, others may argue that United cannot complain with defeat when they made costly mistakes to go 3-0 down shortly after half-time.
Altay Bayındır’s poor parry led to Spurs opening the scoring in the first half but it was further mistakes shortly after half-time from Lisandro Martínez which put United in an extremely difficult position.
Despite the goals from Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo and Jonny Evans later in the second half, it ended up being a mountain too far to climb after Son Heung-min’s bizarre winning goal.
Man Utd have clear problem after conceding goals
It is no secret that United have a problem within their team after conceding goals which existed well before Amorim took charge.
Erik ten Hag’s team regularly would concede goals in quick succession and seemingly fall apart on the pitch. It was an issue which the Dutchman could not seem to fix.
The trend has driven fans mad, with it almost becoming predictable that United would always have spells of uncertainty after conceding.
Spurs’ second and third goals on Thursday evening came within eight minutes of each other, while Nottingham Forest also scored twice against the Reds in seven minutes earlier this month.
Amorim explains ‘disconnect’ after Man Utd concede
However, supporters will be happy with how Amorim addressed the problem after the game to journalists during his press conference.
The head coach was complimentary of his team’s overall performance but highlighted the ‘disconnect’ he felt after the team conceded the first goal.
When asked to elaborate on that, the United boss provided a perfect 130-word explanation of how United need to keep long spells of possession after conceding to solve this problem.
“It’s simple, [we] suffer a goal and then we have to manage to have long possession to calm down the game,” the 39-year-old began.
“You felt that we suffered the goal and then the ball went to the middle and we continued to play our way but we lose a lot of balls near our box with the team all open – we were really nervous in that moment. Then, one long ball we suffer the third goal.
“We managed to calm down, push again and score three goals. So when I say disconnect… of course we suffer a goal but we have to think what we should do.
“When you suffer a goal, you have to have long possession to calm down and stay in the game and we could not do it.”

As a fan, it feels great to listen to Amorim’s explanations and understand how he is trying to find a solution and this is a great example of that.
This will be a development that fans will be keeping an eye on in the coming months and hoping that it can help stop the collapse we keep seeing from players after conceding a goal.
