Rúben Amorim disagrees with interviewer about Man Utd’s biggest problem vs Wolves, it must be fixed

Despite winning 4-1, Rúben Amorim still thinks there is a major problem in his Manchester United side that needs to be addressed.

Rúben Amorim claimed his biggest victory of the season on Monday night as Manchester United powered past Wolverhampton Wanderers with an authoritative four-goal display in the Premier League.

United came out strong and controlled the early stages. After 20 minutes of constant pressure, Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock, finishing off a move sparked by sharp pressing from Matheus Cunha, even if the finish was not the most convincing.

Bryan Mbeumo, Cunha, and Amad each threatened to double the lead, but it was Wolves who struck back. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde levelled just before half-time, bringing an end to the hosts’ eight-hour wait for a Premier League goal.

Both teams returned unchanged after the interval, though United immediately showed greater intent. Mbeumo restored the lead with a composed finish, and Mason Mount quickly added a third after a clever assist from Fernandes.

The result was sealed when United won a penalty with ten minutes remaining. Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted, completing the club’s most emphatic win of the campaign and lifting them into sixth place in the league.

Amorim disagrees with clinical claim

This is only the second time under Amorim that United have managed to score four goals in 90 minutes, but having played a very poor Wolves side, the question still remains about whether they can replicate these kinds of performances more often.

When asked by a Sky Sports reporter after the game if United’s 27 shots meant that United are becoming more clinical, Amorim disagreed with the claim.

“We scored four, but we had a lot of shots, so I cannot make that connection with more clinical. I think we improved a lot if you compare last season and this season.

“We are creating so much more chances and score more goals and having more real situations of danger. So I’m really pleased with that.”

Attacking improvements but work still to be done

It was clear to see that coming into this season, Amorim’s United side was in desperate need of a complete overhaul to its forward line after a disappointing 2024/25 league campaign.

Manchester United scored an extremely poor 42 goals last season, the fifth fewest in that season, as they finished 15th in the league.

Mbeumo has certainly papered over the cracks of the lack of a prolific number nine this season with six goals, but Benjamin Šeško did show some promising signs before the injury against Tottenham.

While Amad and Mbeumo have developed a great partnership down the right flank, the same can’t be said for Cunha down the left, who, despite putting in some good performances, especially against Liverpool, the Brazilian has just one goal and one assist so far this season.

Of the 27 shots, just 10 were on target, a rate of around 37%. So far this season, Šeško has a 50% shot on target rate, with 9 on target out of a possible 18. Once the Slovenian returns from injury, and the team continues to gel, one would expect the clinicality of the side to improve.
