Ruben Amorim delivers clear verdict on Diego León’s Man Utd debut and sends fans important reminder

Manchester United opened their five-match pre-season schedule with a 0-0 draw against Leeds United in Stockholm, as Rúben Amorim’s side struggled to break down their long-time rivals.

The match marked the first outing of the 2025/26 preparations for Manchester United, with supporters getting an early look at new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego León in their first appearance donning a United shirt. Leeds started brightly, putting United under early pressure, but Amorim’s men gradually grew into the game and began to get on the ball more.

United’s most promising spell came in the final 10 minutes of the first half. After some slick build-up play, Cunha appeared poised to finish a flowing move, only for Chido Obi to take the chance himself, seeing his effort drift just wide of the post.

Amorim made wholesale changes at the break, introducing key names such as Kobbie Mainoo, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, and Rasmus Højlund. In total, 24 players featured as the manager assessed his squad ahead of a crucial campaign.

The second half saw a more composed United performance, but despite several positive moments, neither side could find a breakthrough. The pre-season opener ended in a frustrating stalemate, with both teams sharing the spoils in Stockholm.

León showed promising signs on debut

Many would have been surprised to see the 18-year-old starting for the first time having only joined from Paraguay a couple of weeks ago.

Despite that, León put in a very promising performance, completing 12 of his 15 passes, winning his only tackle, three of his six attempted duels, and making three recoveries in 45 minutes.

Despite this pre-season game being his first taste of the physicality of English football, León didn’t at all look out of place, putting in a very assured performance.

Amorim was pleased by the display from the teenager but also sent an important reminder to fans that they need to consider his circumstances.

“We have to understand that the kid came from Paraguay,” the United boss explained. “It’s the first week, second week at Manchester United. He did really well. He’s learning things, he’s powerful. He’s going to be a very good player.”

What will León’s role be this season?

With the news coming out recently that Amorim has decided to send Harry Amass out on loan for the 2025/26 season, León may have a part to play this season.

Despite skepticism over the 18-year-old’s ability to have a part to play in this squad, the 45 minutes against Leeds will have put many at ease.

It’s expected that the 18-year-old will be an understudy to Dorgu this season with the club not expected to sign another left-sided defender.

With Luke Shaw’s injury issues, Amorim needs left-sided defensive cover, and León looks ready to play some minutes if he’s ever called upon by Amorim, and to rotate in cup competitions.
