Ruben Amorim was unable to convince the Manchester United board about signing a ‘world-class’ player this summer despite a deal being close.
Manchester United have made three major signings so far this summer to try and bolster Ruben Amorim’s options in his squad.
The additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško came to a total of around £200 million, showcasing that the board are trying to back the head coach.
Those three signings should greatly improve United’s attack, which was the most concerning aspect at Old Trafford last season.
But there remains issues in the squad that still need fixing, particularly in midfield and between the sticks, although it remains to be seen whether United will make more major signings before the deadline.
Amorim could not convince United about signing ‘world-class’ star
At the moment, reports are suggesting that United are unlikely to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and André Onana is expected to be the first-choice throughout the season.
But there was a time in the summer when a major addition in that position seemed on the verge of happening, with Emi Martínez being linked with a move.
The ‘world-class’ Aston Villa goalkeeper was keen on a move to Old Trafford and reports even suggested that a loan offer had been sent to the Midlands club.
Now, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has revealed that the deal for Martínez to move to United was ‘very close’ and Amorim was pushing for a deal.
But the reporter explained that the United boss was unable to convince the board, with Jason Wilcox leading the recruitment process, to spend the money on the goalkeeper.
United avoiding Martínez was a good decision
Martínez is a goalkeeper who conflicts opinion and some fans are glad that a move will not occur for the World Cup winner this summer.
Despite clearly having the confidence needed to be United goalkeeper, he has made many mistakes over the last couple of seasons in the Premier League.
In fact, his last appearance came against United at the end of last season and he made a terrible mistake which led to him being sent off and Villa missing out on Champions League football.
With big wages too, perhaps it was a good idea for United to avoid this deal but the lack of any signing in goal is a concern, especially when Onana’s backup in Altay Bayındır consistently makes mistakes when called upon.
