Manchester United are eyeing a £50 million signing this summer amid Rúben Amorim’s wish for his side to have more players in the ilk of captain Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United are set to strengthen their midfield this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to address ongoing struggles in the centre of the pitch.

Creativity has been a persistent issue for United this season, with the team often failing to break down defences and rarely scoring more than once per game. Their inconsistency at Old Trafford has only deepened concerns over their lack of control in midfield.

January saw multiple loan departures, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.

Further changes in midfield are expected at the end of the season. Christian Eriksen is set to leave upon the expiry of his contract, while Casemiro is no longer in Amorim’s plans.

As a result, United are preparing for a pivotal summer transfer window, targeting midfielders who can provide more creativity, energy, and tactical flexibility to fit Amorim’s vision.

United eyeing £50m summer transfer

With Eriksen set to depart United, the club will no doubt be looking to add fresh creativity to the midfield, and have reportedly settled on a rising Premier League star to fit the bill.

According to CaughtOffside, United have shown interest in Nottingham Forest sensation Morgan Gibbs-White, who has been essential to Nuno Espírito Santo’s push for Champions League spots this campaign.

With Forest sitting third in the League table, the 25-year-old has been fantastic for the midlands club, and although they do not want to let him go and are hoping to open talks for a new deal soon, they have reportedly named their price.

It is claimed that should Forest receive a bid in the region of around £50 million, they would be willing to let the player leave.

However, United are not the only club looking to secure Gibbs-White, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Tottenham all reportedly keeping tabs on him ahead of the summer window.

“brilliant” Gibbs-White can be like Fernandes

Forest’s push to finish in the top four this season and reach the Champions League for the first time since the 1983/84 season (when the competition was called the European Cup), was dealt a huge boost last weekend.

With top-four rivals Man City in town, Nuno’s men secured a spirited 1-0 victory over Pep Guardiola, thanks to a fantastic finish from Callum Hudson-Odoi on the right flank.

However, it was Gibbs-White who garnered much of the praise for the goal, producing a pass that commentator Ally McCoist dubbed “brilliant” to push Forest up the pitch before producing a lung-busting run to get into the area himself with fewer than 10 minutes left to play.

This is the exact type of character that Amorim needs right now. Bruno Fernandes has been the only type of player who is capable of producing the type of pass that Gibbs-White did against City while also being able to make the run into the area after.

Recently, Amorim said he wishes his team had “more Brunos” concerning having more players in his squad who can produce this level of quality while also maintaining an incredible work ethic.

With Gibbs-White clearly showing himself as this type of player, United may have found Amorim his second Fernandes-type player, for a fee very similar to the £47 million they paid for the Portuguese international in 2020.
