Roy Keane does not believe that signing Mason Mount will make Manchester United a better team under Erik ten Hag.

Mount, 24, has agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford club and the two clubs have also finally come to an agreement on a fee for the player.

The midfielder, who has won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award twice, will cost The Reds £55 million, with the possibility of that fee rising to £60 million.

It’s been a potential transfer that has split opinion within the United fanbase, with some believing that Ten Hag knows what he’s doing and will reignite the Englishman’s form similarly to how he helped improve Marcus Rashford after coming to the club.

However, others have suggested that United could buy a better fit and player for the price that Mount will cost. Chelsea are now going for Moises Caicedo, who is just 21-years-old and is rated extremely highly.

Ten Hag has been a big fan of Mount for several years, though, and even attempted to sign him at Ajax when the player was on loan at Eredivisie club Vitesse in 2017/18.

But United legend Roy Keane does not believe the signing elevates the team following their third place Premier League finish last term, as he hopes they are able to close the gap to the top of the table.

“You’d hope to think United could challenge them [City] next year, but it’s going to be very, very difficult because City are brilliant and they’ve got a great, great manager,” Keane told Sky Sports last month.

“I wouldn’t be so sure about Mount. They’ve been linked with lots of players but the one who would excite you is Kane.

Asked why he has doubts over the midfielder, Keane replied: “He’s gone off the boil a little bit.

“I know he can bounce back and he’s got qualities, I was raving about him a few years ago but he’s just gone missing this last year or two, again, one or two injuries, the fact he can’t get in a bad Chelsea team.

“I wouldn’t be hanging my hat too much on him, in terms of improving United and closing the gap, I think he’s a good player but would be improve Man United? I’m not so sure.”
