Rio Ferdinand has revealed that there is “a bad feeling” surrounding Manchester United in recent times, but there is a £55 million solution in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United have suffered their poorest season in front of goal in recent memory, having scored just 38 goals in the Premier League, with just six games to go.
Last season was United’s worst since the beginning of the Premier League in 1992, registering just 60 points, but even then the Red Devils still scored 57 goals.
It would take over three goals a game to score more than in Erik ten Hag’s last full season, simply unacceptable for a team like United.
Scoring has been just one of the many problems that Ruben Amorim has had to deal with in his short time in Manchester, but it needs to be solved quickly.
Ferdinand says there is “a bad feeling” at United
Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of United’s clash with Olympique Lyonnais at Old Trafford in the Europa League, Rio Ferdinand revealed his beliefs on the scoring woes at the Red Devils.
United have scored just 38 goals in 32 Premier League fixtures this season, which is a shocking return compared to the United teams of old.
“Imagine when we were playing,” Ferdinand said, turning to his former United teammate Paul Scholes, “that feeling of where are we going to score from? How are we going to score? That’s a bad feeling to have in a football club.”
“And then obviously that creates nervous energy throughout the team. And it’s like sitting ducks thinking, well, we’re going to concede at some point because we can’t score, we can’t put this team on the back foot, we can’t run over them. So where do we go?”
Striker solution in the summer
Ferdinand, without outright saying it, is demanding that United go out and sign a new centre forward in the summer transfer window.
Victor Osimhen appears to now be available for a fee close to £55 million and United should be the first to consider approaching Napoli for the Nigerian.
While out on loan at Galatasaray, Osimhen has scored 21 goals in the league alone, with a further six goals in the Europa League.
This is nearly more than Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have in both of their United careers combined.
