Rio Ferdinand has explained a Premier League transfer Manchester United sanctioned that he “couldn’t believe” during their defeat to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

After a successful opening match against Fulham, Manchester United faced an unexpected defeat to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

The game was balanced early on, but Brighton broke through in the 30th minute when former Red Devil Danny Welbeck scored past Erik ten Hag’s defence. Marcus Rashford quickly answered with a goal, but it was disallowed for offside.

In the second half, Amad Diallo scored an equalizer, but Alejandro Garnacho’s subsequent goal was ruled out for offside due to a touch from Joshua Zirkzee. Antony also had a chance to make an impact but couldn’t score.

As the match approached its end, Joao Pedro seized the opportunity and headed in the winning goal from the back post just moments before the final whistle.

However, ahead of the game, Ferdinand explained that when United sold Welbeck to Arsenal in 2014 for a fee of £16 million, he could not believe it.

“Nothing surprises me with Danny Welbeck,” Ferdinand told TNT Sports while discussing the game ahead of time.

“I watched him as a young kid at Manchester United, and he was a wonderful player.

“I couldn’t believe it when United agreed to let him go because I thought he had so much value, not only as a player but just around the place as well as a former academy player.

“I think he’s someone who players who have played against him respect more than some fans who don’t quite realise how difficult he is to play against. He’s a great professional, too.”

Welbeck’s goal against United was his 100th club career strike. Although his talents have undoubtedly been displayed throughout his career, they have also been littered with injury problems.

While at United, Welbeck missed 38 games through injury across four seasons for club and country, including during his loans to Preston North End and Sunderland.

From there, the problems only got worse, and he has missed 249 games throughout his career so far, but he seemingly found solace during the twilight of his career at Brighton.
