Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have completely agreed on the best position of an “exquisite” Manchester United player after a stunning comeback against Lyon.
Manchester United’s late comeback against Olympique Lyonnais will go down as one of the greatest in recent times.
The Red Devils went 2-0 up through goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, but conceded two poor goals in the second half, it appeared United were down and out.
Despite captain Tolisso’s dismissal for a second yellow card, Lyon took the lead in the first period of extra time through a goal from wonderkid Rayan Cherki. Alexandre Lacazette gave the French club a two-goal advantage from the penalty spot, Luke Shaw‘s late lunge brought down Fofana and the former Arsenal striker converted with ease.
With just six minutes left to play, Casemiro was brought down and captain fantastic Bruno Fernandes stepped up to make it 4-3. Before Kobbie Mainoo levelled the game in the 120th minute, after a brilliant flick from Casemiro.
Just one minute later, the former Real Madrid maestro crossed the ball from the left-hand side and Harry Maguire was at the back post to cap off a brilliant turnaround from United.
Ferdinand and Scholes agree on Mainoo’s best position
Speaking on TNT Sports after United’s late win against Lyon, United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes spoke on Kobbie Mainoo’s best position.
“Kobbie Mainoo’s finish as well. That was an exquisite finish,” said Ferdinand, “The composure, how calm he was in that situation, when you know the pressure’s on.
“But I said in commentary as well, this is an area in the football pitch [number 10 position] where I feel he’s probably at his most comfortable.”
Scholes added, “That’s the position he has to play for me, you know. I don’t think he’s quite got the energy to play in a team as well. There’s too much, too many spaces to fill. I’m thinking that number 10 roll under Amorim. He has got real quality.”
Mainoo has to start against Wolves
After his impressive performance from the bench against Lyon, Mainoo has to be played from the start against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

His close control is light years ahead of the rest of the squad and he brings a unique skillset to the number 10 position.
Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund will both be struggling to see out a full game on Sunday, but one of them will likely start with the absence of Joshua Zirkzee.
The only other alternative is Chido Obi, who was ineligible for United’s European tie but can be played in the Premier League.
