Concerns over Bruno Fernandes’ captain duties at Manchester United have arisen following the defeat to Liverpool, with belief that there are three better candidates.

United have opted for Fernandes to don the captain’s armband in Harry Maguire’s absence, but doubts have been raised over his capability to fulfil the role following his side’s 7-0 drubbing away at Anfield.

The midfielder has, understandably, been subject to damning criticism following the loss. The scoreline is a sight for sore eyes, but supporters are just as concerned about his behaviour throughout.

When Liverpool ran riot in the second half, a familiar sight of Fernandes’ flailing arms left many – including players – disgruntled. Fernandes was also scrutinised for pushing linesman Adam Nunn in the back as he grew with frustration.

Englishman Maguire is likely to depart Manchester in search of a new challenge this summer which would, in turn, leave the captaincy role up for grabs.

As expected, Fernandes will likely be a frontrunner in the contention for this role, given he has worn the armband on many occasions this term.

However, the Daily Mail have reported that sources close to the United camp say there is a growing concern about whether Fernandes should be the figurehead in the Erik ten Hag era.

The raised eyebrows over the Portugal international’s suitability is not breaking news as reservations have been made previously over his on-field manner.

In all cases like this, there must be better suitors in the camp for such a defining decision to be made. And in this case, step forward: Raphael Varane, David de Gea and Casemiro.

Though the Brazilian’s language barrier may cause an issue, there is a feeling that Manchester United would be better off with one of the named trio as their leading man.

Erik ten Hag has a big decision on his hands seeing as we are entering the dying weeks of the season – should he strip Fernandes of his captaincy or ride the wave and re-assess at the end of the season?

Liverpool away is the latest chapter in Fernandes’ up-and-down relationship with Manchester United fans, with ex-defender Gary Neville branding him a ‘disgrace’ for his actions. Although, Neville’s accusation that the midfielder demanded to be substituted is wide of the mark.

They say you learn from your captain most when you are in the depths and when you are at your worst, and Sunday was no different. The ‘petulant’ Bruno Fernandes we saw play against Liverpool is not befitting of a man to lead Manchester United.
