Ole Gunnar Solskjær‘s reaction tells you what kind of character he is – measured, mindful, and unmistakably Manchester United.
Both Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær impressed the Manchester United hierarchy, but it is believed that Carrick has a more hands-on approach to coaching, and that is the reason they opted for the man from Wallsend.
The decision followed the departure of Rúben Amorim earlier this month, with United moving quickly to identify an interim solution until the end of the season.
Carrick’s realism regarding expectations was also a key factor as to why he beat his opposite number and former colleague, Solskjaer, in landing the job.
According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, the Norwegian wanted a permanent position if he had taken the reins and gotten United Champions League football. There were no such requests from Carrick, which may have swayed their decision.
Solskjær shows Carrick support
Solskjær, who managed United between 2018 and 2021, had been viewed by many supporters as a safe pair of hands in uncertain times.
His previous spell in charge, which included a second-place finish in the Premier League, added weight to the idea of a short-term return. But given that his permanent tenure ended on a sour note, United could not take the chance of reopening those wounds again.
Despite missing out on the role, there appears to be no bitterness from Solskjær towards the club or Carrick – a response that speaks volumes about his values.
In classy Solskjaer fashion, he has given his support to his former assistant, as per BBC Sport. Like every United fan, he wants Carrick to succeed and believes that what happens on the pitch matters more than personal disappointment.
It is a selfless stance – one that will only strengthen his standing among supporters.
Solskjaer tipped Carrick to become United manager
In 2023, Solskjær tipped Carrick to become United manager. Whilst it is only on an interim basis, three years later, his tip has come to fruition.
“Michael is a man of value and principles, a big family man, but his knowledge is also second to none,” the former striker said at the time.
“He’s had Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho as managers, and he’s played with the best players in the world. He is a winner, but he’s still in control of his emotions. I cannot see him not being the Manchester United manager.”
Carrick has long been regarded as a coach with tactical clarity and quiet conviction – traits that align with United’s desire for control rather than commotion.
He will now be tasked with guiding the club through the remainder of the season, aiming to resurrect the stoic spirit that runs through everyone connected with United.
The hierarchy will continue their search for the next permanent manager – it is a search they must get right; there is no margin for error.
